The modern world, dominated by humans, is a savage garden, cultivated for an elite group of predators at the deadly expense of the rest of us. Lestat’s slick, gleaming persona captures the essence of the ruling classes’ wet dream of a self-image: powerful, urbane, ruthless and immortal.
In the fictional savage garden, vampires drain the lifeblood of whomever they choose; every human on earth is vulnerable. And so it is in reality; millions of children are enslaved as laborers in dirty and dangerous jobs; numberless masses of poor women are bought and sold as sex slaves and forced into domestic drudgery; the dispossessed, displaced, those in poverty or need are at the mercy of the overlords that perpetuate the system. Culled like cattle, numbers scarcely thinned by deaths due to preventable diseases, starvation, toxic pollutants (although tens of millions die each year from these causes), and other horrors, 95% of our species must struggle to survive, living in misery and squalor in order to satisfy the whims of the other 5% Vampirism isn’t a myth, it’s our present economic system, wearing a pleasant mask and with a host of carefully crafted justifications.
Though the middle classes in the US are themselves being steadily pushed into the gutter by the rulers, they blind themselves to the hellish landscape this monstrous power structure has made. The grossest injustices blight the land. An enormous prison-industrial complex, filled with dissenters and non-violent offenders. An Orwellian government out of control, busily compiling detailed electronic dossiers on citizens, recording phone calls, e-mail, book purchases, in fact –every record of commercial, medical, governmental, and social transactions. A government that ignores its social contract with the population, discarding civil liberties and the rule of law as unnecessary frivolities, which they view as pointless checks on their power, to be ignored or manipulated at will. Granting itself the right to strip US citizenship from anyone they dislike (by labelling them — without the ability to challenge the designation — a “terrorist”); to seize whatever property they desire on a pretext; to secretly imprison whomever they wish without access to the courts, lawyers, or even family, for as long as their power lasts.
Their excuses for tyranny have grown increasingly barren as the rulers have sensed they needn’t obther to pretend anymore to an apathetic and tamed underclass. A ‘War on Drugs’ that consistently rewards vicious repression and crushes the poor;– a ‘War on Terror’ that neatly replaces the ‘Cold War”, both a fight against imaginary demons easily used to inspire fear and obedience in the subjects.
And the end result ? A brutal police state waging a never-ending ‘Low Intensity” war with its own captive populace. We are there now. The majority of the US (and never mind the vast multitudes suffering oppression in 3rd World nations) living in fear of police that behave as occupying armies terrorizing the neighborhoods of the ‘working poor’ and ‘minorities’ – now comprising close to a majority; US pop. = 18% Black, 17% Hispanic, 5% Asian, 3% Native American.
Only those that are delusional, or that are compromised by occupying a seat at the banquet table of the elite, can look at the state of the planet, and see anything except a poisoned wasteland. Yet the media services its corporate masters, and harnesses every bit of creativity it can summon forth or purchase to pump out a deafening, blinding stream of propaganda convincing the masses that paradise is within their grasp. Of course, one must forget the fact that sonsumer culture is a hollow mockery of meaningful existence; and that the grossly wasteful ‘lifestyle’ promoted by the elite chokes the seas with effluvia; poisons the earth and sky with chemical toxins, and commits mass murder of the animals and plants with whom we share the world; keeping humanity in chains.
BUT… there are reasons for hope: signs of the coming collapse of the status quo, and these will be the themes of the Savage Garden – things like speculations on mass shifts in consciousness; transcendent and mystical states of awareness; intentional communities; political rants; and more.
